Financial Technology (FinTech) is changing the world of finance at an incredible pace, impacting start-ups, financial institutions, regulators and more recently technology companies. Since 2008, the center of gravity of FinTech has shifted to establish itself in Asia with noticeable large-scale changes occurring in China, India and Australia.

In this context, the University of Hong Kong (HKU)’s pre-existing regional presence and financial expertise has been leveraged into FinTech academic leadership. This event will highlight the work of leading academics at HKU as well as a range of new educational initiatives to support human capital development in Hong Kong and around the world.

As part of the Fintech Education Week, Asia Capital Markets Institute (ACMI), Young Makers & ChangeMakers (YMCM) and CityU Apps Lab are hosting a panel discussion and interactive workshop for attendees to learn more about artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in FinTech, and to make their first conversational agent (or “chatbot”).

A maximum of 40 students and members of the general public will have the opportunity to hear leading practitioners Juergen Rahmel (HSBC-ASTRI R&D Lab Research Director Artificial Intelligence) and Brian Tang (Asia Capital Markets Institute Managing Director and Young Makers & ChangeMakers founder) discuss the effect of AI and ML on the financial services industry, and then to participate in a hands-on workshop to create and train their first chatbot using Google’s Dialogflow (formerly known as api.ai). This will be followed by an informal discussion of the important issues of fairness, accountability and transparency in AI and ML (FATML), and mingling with speakers and participants.

About the seminar

Since the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (Financial Institutions) Ordinance became effective in April 2012, the implementation of anti-money laundering (“AML”) compliance programme becomes the hottest regulatory subject among financial institutions in Hong Kong. Banks revamp completely their know-your-customer and transaction monitoring frameworks with an aim to satisfy the regulatory AML requirements.

In this seminar, four practitioners from the industries of financial regulations and compliance technologies will highlight the regulatory AML requirements, explain the challenges facing financial institutions and exhibit how FinTech can be applied to meet these stringent regulatory requirements.
